Currently I am reading “The happiness project” by Gretchen Rubin. I enjoy her approach towards a more fulfilling life, by tweaking and changing little things throughout your day without having a massive life change. I too am pretty happy with my life, but feel like there are still a lot of things to improve. In the beginning of the book, she has written down her twelve commandments to remind her about the principles she has and which she wants to implement in her day-to-day life. I like this concept and that’s why I decided to make my own list of twelve commandments. And because I’m a real sucker for quotes, I wanted to include some of my favorite quotes too:
1 Be myself. Do not question it.
“To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.” – Thich That Hanh
2 Do not gossip.
“Great minds discuss ideas. Average Minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
3 Do not care about the opinions of others.
“If you worry what other people think of you then you have more confidence in their opinion than in your own”
4 Work on your existing relationships.
“Connection is why we’re here; it is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.” – Brené Brown
5 Work on your projects.
“All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.” – Earl Nightingale
6 Do not be discouraged by setbacks. It means you’re progressing.
“If you don’t make mistakes, you aren’t really trying.” – Coleman Hawkins
7 Take care of your body.
“I accept my body. I accept how I am and make the best of what I am given.” – Kate Winslet
8 Make lists.
“We have so much time and so little to do. Strike that, reverse it.” – Roald Dahl
9 Growth is essential for your happiness.
“I am learning every day to allow the space between where I am and where I want to be, to inspire me and not terrify me.” – Tracee Ellis Ross
10 Let the past be the past.
“I realize there’s something incredibly honest about trees in winter, how they’re experts at letting things go.” – Jeffrey McDaniel
11 Love is the base of everything.
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” – Anne Frank
These are my twelve commandments, but what are yours? Or do you feel that making a list like this isn’t something for you? Please leave a comment and share your thoughts about writing down your principles!
“a happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world.” – Atticus
